Boss reprimands employee for taking their 30-minute lunch break, tells them they're 'lucky to have a job' making $16/hr: 'Done being grateful for crumbs'

It's a tough job market out there. It's not easy to catch a break for anyone. That's just the truth. But there is only so much that we feel like putting up with for a paycheck. Everyone has a different line that they don't feel like crossing. Most people don't want to put up with a certain amount of disrespect. We don't want to feel like we're not being valued at our own place of work. We already sacrifice so much to be there, the least the higher-ups can do is make it worth our while. 

What you especially don't want in a workplace is being made to tolerate someone's disrespect because you feel like you have no other option. It's true that it's difficult to find a new job, but that shouldn't stop you from demanding what you deserve. That's what started to happen in this story, where a manager did a great job at making their employee feel worthless. After taking their regular 30-minute break, they couldn't have imagined the reaction that their manager was going to have.

    got called into the office today because I took my 30 min lunch break. apparently the team "needed me" and I should've "read the room" told him it's literally the law and he goes "well in this economy you're lucky to even have a job. plenty of people would kill for your position"

If he's dumb enough to reply you have something to present to your local labor board. If not, he understands that he's dealing with someone who understands how to use his mouth against him and he might back off a little.

    Themanwhofarts . 7h ago Act your wage. I know plenty of jobs that pay more than $16 an hour and I live in a Podunk town. Your boss sucks and is taking advantage of everyone. Also of you find some jobs paying more, share it with your coworkers so they leave that crappy place.

Just to be clear, is this about the discussion we had earlier where you said I should skip my break if the team needs me? I just want to make sure I understand my duties and don't face repercussions, as I'm worried about disciplinary action resulting from that talk!

    dcdave3605 • 5h ago Send all communications to your states department of labor. Ask them if they can investigate patterns of labor law violations. Regardless if your situation wasn't effected, others probably worked through lunch unpaid or other violations occurred and the company will have to respond to that.

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the law that governs wages and hours, does not mandate that employers provide meal or rest breaks to employees. Some states do but not when it can be taken. Could you take it later? Usually it's like 30 minutes in a 5 hour period. My

    state says slaves must be given a one hour break every 23 hours all others are between employees and employers. Freeman are free to work some where else. They refuse to change it stating we are not going to tell doctors, nurses and firefighters or any one else they have to stop their jobs to take a break.

Kid reported it to State Labor board. Since then all breaks must be taken. If you punch back in from lunch one minute early, you get in trouble.
